Ferrolinera Mixed Generation: Railways

Advanced system of electric vehicle recharging through an optimized photo-voltaic generator as a energetic back-up system in the regenerative braking of trains.

The main purpose of this project has been to develop a micro smart grid for the recharging of electric vehicles that is adapted to railway infrastructures. This system utilizes an innovative, regenerative braking technique for trains, an optimized photo-voltaic generator for the architectural integration and efficient use of the solar resource, as well as a power conditioning system and electric storage adapted to the recharge points and to their energetic management.

The regenerative braking is a device that is integrated to the train and it allows for the speed to be reduced, transforming a part of its kinetic energy into electric power, which is integrated to a storage system and then to the electrical vehicles. This system has been developed and shown in other projects by ADIF ( Spanish Railway Infrastructure Administrator) in their energy laboratories.
Additionally, the photo-voltaic generator, along with a solar tracker, will offer an extra power and energy to supply the vehicles with power when the train braking is not present in the station. Thus, it is able to modulate the available generator power so as to not overcharge the system.

This is a project that was developed in the ADIF power laboratory in Madrid, and it was financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation in the “INNPACTO 2011” Program, from the order CIN/699/2011 of march 23rd, from the 2008-2011 National Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation Plan. This projects constitutes the starting point of the development of an electrical vehicle recharge network, using its technology throughout the national and international train stations, which are called “Ferrolineras”.
